Jo Starkey

jo_photo.jpgJo Starkey

Jo was born in Nottingham in 1968 and initially trained to be a dancer. However, this was overshadowed at the age of 16 by her other passion for drawing and painting and Jo went on to do an art foundation course in Nottingham.

Subsequently, Jo moved to London where she juggled her artwork in between working as a temp to allow her more flexibility to paint.  She then took a year off to go travelling around the world and during her travels she gained lots of inspiration and returned to London full of ideas, which flowed into her artwork.

Jo experimented with different mediums, including pastels and water colours, until she discovered silk painting- Jo was captivated by the translucent texture of silk, which illuminates and projects colour.  From then on, having found her niche, Jo went on to produce and market her work more seriously by creating contemporary silk wall hangings incorporating different mediums, which she sold to shops and galleries in London and Nottingham.

After having her son, Thomas, in 2003, Jo then moved to Sussex and continued to build on her success as a silk painter.  She works from her studio at home and sells her work through local exhibitions, galleries and cafes.
